History
South entrance
- May 22, 1888 Opened as Ashikaga Station (足利駅 -eki) of Ryōmō Railway.
- November 1, 1906 Ryōmō Railway was nationalized and became Ryōmō Line(JNR).
- February 1, 1984 Discontinued freight services.
- April 1, 1987 JNR divided and became private, and this station became a station of East Japan Railway Company.

- Ashikaga Gakkō(足利学校):referred to as the oldest school in Japan.
