Arts University Bournemouth (formerly The Arts University College at Bournemouth and The Arts Institute at Bournemouth) is a further and higher education university based in Poole, United Kingdom, specialising in Arts, Performance, Design, and Media.

Arts University Bournemouth was named No.1 Creative University in the Which? University 2012 survey.^[1] In November 2012, the University also celebrated a 97.7% employment rate.^[2]

History

In 1964, Bournemouth and Poole College of Art was formed through the merger of Bournemouth Municipal College of Art and Poole College of Art. The name was changed to Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design in 1980, and the first new building on the present campus was opened in 1984, built at a cost of £2.3 million.^[3]

In 1998, the name was changed to The Arts Institute at Bournemouth (AIB) and in 2001 the AIB became a higher education institution.^[4] The AIB was one of only a few HEIs that focused exclusively on creative work in contemporary art, design, media and performance.

In 2009 the Arts Institute changed its name to the Arts University College at Bournemouth following the acquisition of Taught Degree Awarding Powers in 2008.

Arts University College at Bournemouth officially became Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) following approval from the Privy Council on 13 December 2012.

The Government announced in June 2012 that the qualifying threshold for full university title was to be lowered from 4,000 to 1,000 full-time higher education students, and with the AUB satisfying the criteria for full university title, permission was put forward for formal ratification from the Privy Council which has now been granted.

Campus

Students are based within one campus which is located in Poole, next to Bournemouth University and Wallisdown. The Campus houses specialist workshops and workspaces, Gallery, Museum of Plastics and Library. Development works for 2014 - 2016 include:

• A new Photography Building offering flexible teaching space, IT suites and a Lecture Theatre.
• Crab Drawing Studio – the first of its kind to be built in the UK since the 1900s, has been designed by Professor Sir Peter Cook (AUB Visiting Professor).
• A new Student Services building with a dedicated space to meet with student advisors.
• Conversion of BH12 Halls of Residence (on campus) for dedicated teaching space.

Courses

AUB offers Summer and Short courses, Foundation, BA (Hons) and MA & Research degrees. New for 2015/16 - BA (Hons) Dance, BA (Hons) Motion Graphics Design and Production, and BA (Hons) Visual Effects Design and Production.

Accommodation

In 2014 AUB opened a block of halls for 378 students in Bournemouth town centre called Madeira Road. They also offer private lets.

kscope

kscope is an App created by Arts University Bournemouth. It allows the user to capture and share their view of the world through a series of kaleidoscope filters. When it was launched in November 2013 it hit the front page of the UK App store.
