Artist Trust

Artist Trust is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting Washington artists working in all creative disciplines. Artist Trust provides artists the time and resources necessary to prosper. Since 1987 it has invested over ten million dollars in grants, resources and career training to thousands of Washington State’s most promising and respected musicians, visual artists, writers, dancers, craft artists, filmmakers, cross-disciplinary artists and more. It is located in Seattle, Washington, and serves the entire state.[1]

Mission and vision

Artist Trust is a not-for-profit organization "whose sole mission is to support and encourage individual artists working in all disciplines in order to enrich community life throughout Washington State."

To accomplish its mission, Artist Trust raises funds from an array of sources in order to: 1) Give financial grants, through a peer review process, to individual artists working in the visual, performing, media, literary, and interdisciplinary arts; 2) Serve as a professional information resource for artists and encourage artists to support each other; and, 3) Provide recognition and support for the contributions artists make to the lives of people of Washington State and for the merit and integrity of artists' work.

Vision statement: "Artist Trust envisions a future where artists throughout Washington State have access to the resources they need to express their creative spirit and where artists are held in the highest esteem."[1]

Background and programs

Artist Trust was founded in 1987 by a group of artists and artist supporters who sought a creative way to remedy the lack of support for individual artists of all disciplines in Washington State. It is the only organization in Washington State, and one of few throughout the country, that provides grants directly to individual artists. Artist Trust serves thousands of artists annually through its core programs of Grants and Information Services.

Artist Trust offers several grants to Washington State artists: 1) Grants for Artist Projects (GAP); 2) Fellowships; 3) James W. Ray Venture Project Awards; 4) Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement; 5) Arts Innovator Award; 6) James W. Ray Distinguished Artist Award; and 7) Conductive Garboil Grant.

Artist Trust's Creative Career Center provide career training and professional development necessary for artists, including information on funding, health care, opportunities, legal issues, housing and studio space, and more. It offers workshops on grant-writing and resources for artists throughout the year, as well as the comprehensive EDGE Professional Development Program.[1]

Funding

Artist Trust is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, Ford Foundation, Leveraging Investments in Creativity, Washington Women's Foundation, Washington State Arts Commission, and many other government, corporate, foundation and individual supporters.[2]
