Arthur "Artur" John was an English football manager who managed Vitória de Setúbal, Benfica and Sporting CP in Portugal.

Managerial career

He first managed V. Setúbal for 6 seasons in which he won 2 Campeonato de Lisboa, 2 newly created Campeonato de Setúbal and they were runners-up in the 1926-27 Campeonato de Portugal.

That success led him to bigger clubs. In 1929, Arthur John became the first foreign manager of Benfica. In his two seasons in charge, he led them to their first national title, winning the Campeonato de Portugal, ending a 10-year drought, and retained it in 1930-31.

He was then hired by Sporting who paid him 16 contos. John didn't have as much success there and was replaced in mid May 1933.[1]

He was an unusual manager because he acted as a massage therapist and massaged his players when they approached the bench for instructions. He was convinced that the player-manager role shouldn't exist, saying, "You either coach or play" [2]
