Armadale Public School

Armadale Public School (commonly known as simply Armadale) is a public elementary school located in Markham, Ontario, Canada. It is located north-east of the major intersections of McCowan Road and Steeles Avenue, near the Toronto district of Scarborough. The school is part of the York Region District School Board. It contains about 730 student and about 60 - 70 staff members.

To the east of the school's property is James Edward Park. It consists of a playground, a massive soccer field and a baseball diamond which is shared with nearby St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School. Armadale Public School is a feeder school of Middlefield Collegiate Institute.

History

Armadale Public School was established in a newly developed residential neighbourhood in south Markham in the 1980s.It is said the exact spot of Armadale Public School nearly 400 years ago in the 17th century was the spot Charles I of England castle which is supposedly 20,000 square feet it was bulldozed down in the late 1700s when Markham was settled in by European's due to Monarchy Re-civlization,about 200 years later Armadale Public School was built on the exact spot as Charle's castle. It is rumored that the 2nd floor science department was the Throne room of Charle's. The school itself is named after Armadale, Ontario, the community in which it is situated.

Construction of the school began in 1989 with classes officially commencing in September 1990. The school and community members have worked as an integral team to make Armadale Public School the focal point of the community at large. Armadale strives to be a community school.

In the early 2000s, the school underwent heavy renovations to accommodate the ever-growing student population. At that time, Armadale Public School was close to reaching a population of 1000 students. In the summer of 2001, a new two-floor wing replaced the white "portapak" attachment connected to the south. Other additions to the facility include a second gymnasium, new classrooms, pathways on the playfield, an expansion of the parking lot, and new soccer goal posts. The original music room, lunchroom, and a few portables were subsequently removed. The school also features a portapak which gives four extra classrooms to the school.

In 2012, the school was renovated inside to accommodate Full Day Kindergarten. Two new Kindergarten rooms were created from existing classroom space.

Armadale is designated as a Performance Plus school by the York Region District School Board.^[1]

Armadale has a Parent Family Literacy Centre which is open daily to children and their caregivers from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm. It is a drop in program, free of charge.

There is also a daycare facility called Family Day in the school. They offer both toddler/ pre-school programs as well as a before and after school daycare.

Identity

The school motto is: Learning From Each Other Armadale's former motto is ‘Three R’s’ — respect for self, respect for others and respect for the environment, through the, ‘Three C’s” — communication, cooperation and sense of community..

The first school mascot that was adopted was a maroon armadillo, and the student body were known as the Armadale Armadillos. In 1999, Armadale adopted the second school mascot which is an anaconda entwined around a storybook-letter A, symbolizing the inclusion and strength gathered by students, staff, parents and community. The school colours were teal and silver, but have now been changed to green, black and white and in athletics the students are referred to as the Armadale Eagles.
