Arkebe Oqubay

Arkebe Oqubay is an senior Ethiopian politician. He is a former mayor of Addis Ababa (2003–2005), as well as a former State Minister of Works and Urban Development. He is currently a Minister and Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, the board chair to the Ethiopian Railway Corporation and the deputy chairman of the board of directors of Ethiopian Airlines.

Elected as part of the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front coalition, on March 31, 2005 Arkebe was named "African Mayor of 2005" by Broadcasting Network of Africa. Mayor Arkebe lost the mayorship of Addis Ababa in May 2005, but six months later his successor-elect, Berhanu Nega, was one of many politicians from the opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy party to be arrested and charged with trying to overthrow the government, and other offences.[1]
