Archibald is a male given name or surname of Old High German and Old French , and later lowland Scottish, origin whose meaning is "genuine, bold, brave." As a given name it is often shortened to "Archie" or "Arch." A less common Italian version is Archimboldo. In Scottish usage, it is sometimes used to translate the Gaelic given name Gille Easbuig, also Anglicized as Gillespie.
