Applemore College is a secondary school in Hampshire, England, situated near the small village of Dibden Purlieu very near to the Forest. It offers education to students between the ages of 11 and 16 and has had specialist subject status for the teaching of Technology.[1] The college's slogan is "Going Forward Together."[2] The number of students on roll has dropped in the last few years from 854 in 2001[3] down to 491 in 2012.[4]
History
The college was built in 1969 as a comprehensive co-educational school. It became one of the first Technology Colleges in 1994.
In the mid nineties, the college suffered an arson attack that destroyed the interior of the "New Block" which housed the arts and languages departments. Temporary buildings were erected to house these departments until the building was repaired the following year, and the college is currently undergoing a massive investment in its buildings.
In the report of the Ofsted Inspection carried out on 12–13 October 2005, the school was rated as inadequate, although some aspects were rated as satisfactory or good.[5]
Frank Callaghan was succeeded by Matthew Longden as Headteacher in September 2005.[3][5] In a later Ofsted Inspection carried out on 1–2 November 2006, the school received a "Good" grade and was said to have improved a great deal since the appointment of the new headteacher who was described as "outstanding".[6] At Christmas 2008, Longden left the college to take up the post of Headteacher at Toynbee School. Ian Coombs, who holds the post of Deputy Headteacher at Wyvern Technology College, was Acting Headteacher between January and September 2009. During interviews in March 2009, Roland Marsh, then Deputy Headteacher at Hounsdown School was appointed permanent Headteacher for September 2009.[7] In the Ofsted report for 2009 the school maintained its overall rating of "good".[8]
Facilities
Applemore College is able to offer additional sports facilities to students due to close links with the Applemore Health and Leisure Centre next door. These include swimming, basketball, indoor football, volleyball (through good links with local club New Forest Volleyball Club, spinning (stationary bikes) and trampolining.
