Appleford School is an independent specialist dyslexia school in Wiltshire.
History
Appleford was founded in 1988 by Dr Peter Gardner, a Chartered Educational Psychologist, a Chartered Forensic Psychologist and a Chartered Counselling Psychologist of the British Psychological Society and Gerald Trump. Zoë Wanamaker, CBE later became Patron of Appleford.
Appleford specialises in teaching pupils with dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia. The school is accredited by the Council for the Registration of School Teaching dyslexic pupils (CReSTeD).
In 2012 the Independent Schools Inspectorate rated the school "excellent" in all areas, including "overall achievement of the pupils", "pupil's personal development" and "quality of the school's governance, leadership and management".[1] The 2015 Boarding Ofsted inspection rated the school "outstanding" in all areas. The school was shortlisted for the Independent School Awards 2014 in two categories: "outstanding strategic initiative" and "special needs initiative of the year".[2]
General information
Appleford takes a whole-school approach to dyslexia using research-based multi-sensory programmes and resources. It has small classes of 8 to 12 pupils with high levels of LSA support. It employs approximately 30 staff, including specialist staff. The school gives access to qualifications including GCSEs (with options at Year 9) and BTEC Vocational and Functional Skills Certificates. It takes on students on a day, weekly and full board basis.
Former pupils are known as Old Applefordians.
Houses
The school is split into four houses: Holly House (girl boarders), Elm House (boy boarders), The Beeches (boy boarders) and Oak House (day pupils). All houses are on the main school site, except Holly House which is in the local village.
