History
On 9 June 1949 Pope Pius XII established the Prefecture Apostolic of Mitú from the Apostolic Vicariate of Los Llanos de San Martín. It lost territory when the Apostolic Vicariate of San José del Guaviare was created in 1989. On 19 June of the same year Blessed John Paul II elevated it to a Vicariate Apostolic and named it the Apostolic Vicariate of Mitú-Puerto Inírida. It was split in two on 30 November 1996 creating the Apostolic Vicariate of Inírida and the Apostolic Vicariate of Inírida.[1][2]
