Anything Goes is the second studio album by American bro-country duo Florida Georgia Line. It was released on October 14, 2014, by Republic Nashville.[3] The release of the album was announced August 15 from Central Park in New York City on Good Morning America.[4][5] The album was produced by Joey Moi.[6] Its first single, "Dirt", peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.[7][8]
Critical reception
Anything Goes has received mixed reviews from critics. Writing for Allmusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine criticized the anonymity of the duo and their music, claiming that "they're playing to the largest possible audience, so nobody should be surprised that Anything Goes is so broad it avoids such messiness as personality." He awarded the album 3 stars out of 5.[1] Tom Roland awarded the album 4 out of 5 stars in his review for Billboard, saying that "it shores up the duo's country flanks, and demonstrates that FGL intends to aggressively protect its progressive place in the genre, one that the act essentially designed on its own." [2]
While Grady Smith of The Guardian named Anything Goes one of the worst country albums of 2014, he praised the song Dirt, saying "a genuinely thoughtful song (written by Rodney Clawson and Chris Tompkins) about the rich memories that linger at your home. But Dirt was a true outlier, and it only made the rest of the album land with even more of a thud." [9]
Commercial performance
The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 197,000 copies.[10] As of the second week of February 2015, the album has sold 593,700 copies in the US.[11]
In Canada, the album debuted at number two on the Canadian Albums Chart, selling 16,000 copies.[12]
