Anup Kumar Yama (born 1 September 1984) is an Indian Roller Skate Athlete. He won two bronze medals^[1] at 2010 Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China in Men's Single Free Skating and Pairs Skating with his partner Avani Panchal.

Career

Anup started skating at the age of 4 and was coached by his father Mr. Veeresh Yama, who is a national coach. Yama practices at the Indira Gandhi rink in Domalguda and has won several national titles.^[2]

Born on 1 September 1984 in an athlete family, a second generation performer, he is now ranked No: 1 in the world in the category ‘Inline Artistic Roller Skating’ at the recently concluded 2013 58th World Artistic Roller Skating Championship in Taiwan.

After having achieved the historic feat of winning the first world medal for India in Roller Skating in the first 2 weeks of October by winning a bronze medal for India in the 57th World Artistic Roller Skating Championship 2012, New Zealand, he headed straight to the 15th Asian Roller Skating Championship, Hefei-CHINA held from 23 to 31 October where he won 3 GOLD MEDALS AND 2 SILVER MEDALS. This achievement of his has made him surpass his previous Asian Championship achievement of 3 Gold medals and 2 Bronze Medals which was the highest grade medals won by a single skater ever in Asian Championship Artistic Skating. Beating his own previous record, he stands as the winner of highest medals ever won by an Artistic Skater in Asia at a single Asian Championship.

Anup Kumar Yama put on his skates at the age of 4 years. He is the first person to introduce Indian talent in Roller Sport to the entire world. He forged a strong international fan following with his awe-inspiring combination spins, signature style triple jumps, and perfect landings. He has now become a benchmark for tens of thousands of aspiring skaters in India and abroad.

His obsession towards this sport and years of hard work made him create a history for being the only Indian to win:

80 Gold Medals at the District Level
80 Gold Medals at the National Level
8 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals and 9 Bronze medals at the Asian Level
1 Bronze at the World Level
1 Gold medal at world level

He is the only skater in India to participate in more than 10 World Championships and has a unique distinction of being ranked No 1 in India, 1st in Asia and 1st in the entire World.

He got his entire formal training from his father Mr.Veeresh Yama mother Mrs. Jaya Yama, the father being a skater himself previously and now is currently a judge at the National Level. He visits Italy every year to further fine tune his skating techniques from international coaches of repute. Even after 2 decades of roller sports, he works as hard now as he did as a kid and would never miss an opportunity to learn new things in skating.

He has shown the entire world, his nation, his family and fellow skaters to succeed against all the odds of inadequate infrastructure and acute shortage of financial assistance.

To become No: 1 in the World and to bring India into limelight is a dream which he has achieved.
