Anu Muhammad Anisur Rahman, better known by Anu Muhammad (Bengali: আনু মুহাম্মদ; born 1956), is a Bangladeshi Economist and political activist. He is a professor at Jahangirnagar University where he has taught economics since 1982 and taught anthropology from 1991 to 2005. He was a visiting professor at University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba in 2001 and stayed at Columbia University as a visiting Scholar in 1993. His research is focused on globalisation, social transformation, gender issues, non-governmental organisations and energy.
Political views
Besides his academic activities, Anu Muhammad is also a political activist against repression and discrimination, therefore against capitalism, imperialism, racism, patriarchy and oppression. His involvement in resistance and his appearance in TV talk shows led to a death threat in February 2008.[1] He was injured by the police in September 2009 during a demonstration protesting exploration deals granted to two international oil companies.[2][3] This event led to a protest by the Bangladesh Economic Association[4] and to an open letter condemning the event signed by academics from around the world.[5]
