Anton Bitel
Dr Anton Bitel (born 1970) is a film critic,[1] and an occasional tutor in Classics at the University of Oxford.
Born in Australia, Anton obtained a Master's degree and Doctorate from the University of Oxford. His doctorate (Classics) was concerned with ghost stories, adultery tales and the construction of identity in the Latin novel the Golden Ass by Apuleius.
He now lives in Oxford, where he continues to teach Ancient Greek and Latin to undergraduates; but the greater part of his time is devoted to film-related writing.
He prefers horror, 'arthouse', the avant garde and East Asian cinema, and any films that are challenging, marginal or macabre, but he has reviewed the gamut of genres, writing for Sight & Sound, [2]Film4,[3] Little White Lies (magazine),[4] movieScope Magazine,[5] Empire (film magazine),[6] Total Film,[7] Eye For Film,[8] MusicOMH,[9] Film International[10] and Movie Gazette,[11] amongst others. He has been a member of the Online Film Critics Society[12] since 2007, and of the London Film Critics' Circle[13] since 2009.
