Antikyra (Greek: Αντίκυρα) is a port town and a former community in Boeotia, Greece, near the location of the ancient settlement Anticyra. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Distomo-Arachova-Antikyra, of which it is a municipal unit.[2] Population 1,537 (2011).

Geography

Antikyra is situated on the north coast of the Gulf of Corinth, 2 km southwest of Paralia Distomou (also known as Aspra Spitia), 10 km southeast of Desfina and 22 km west of Livadeia. Besides Antikyra proper, the municipal unit contains the villages Agia Sotira and Agios Isidoros.

History

Antikyra takes its name from the ancient port town Anticyra. At the time of Greek independence (1830s) the settlement was known as Asprospitia.[3] It was established in 1836 as an independent municipality, which also included the town Desfina. In 1912 this municipality was split into two communities, Desfina and Antikyra. The community Antikyra existed until 2010, when it was merged into the new municipality Distomo-Arachova-Antikyra.[4]
