Andrew Sherman

Andrew J. Sherman (born September 5, 1961) is a corporate and transactional lawyer, business school and law school professor, featured speaker, and author.[1] Sherman is an internationally recognized expert on legal and strategic aspects of business growth with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic alliances, capital formation, franchising, and other types of intellectual property leveraging and growth strategies.[2][3] Sherman is currently a senior partner at the Washington, DC office of Jones Day (a global law firm).[4] Additionally, he is an Adjunct Professor for the MBA programs at McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University[5] as well as at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park.[6] A prolific author, Sherman has written 18 books including Road Rules.[7]

Early life

Sherman grew up in West Philadelphia.[8] He attended Lower Merion High School.[4] In 1986 Sherman earned his Juris Doctor degree from American University, Washington College of Law [9]

Career

Lawyer

After running his own firm for several years,[10] Sherman served as a partner in the Washington, DC offices of such large law firms as Greenberg Traurig,[11] McDermott Will & Emery,[12] and Dickstein Shapiro.[13] In February 2009, Sherman joined Jones Day in their Washington, DC office as a senior partner in the M&A and Corporate department.[14]

Sherman was named on the Greater Washington "Legal Elite" list by Washington SmartCEO in 2006,[15] and in the 2007,[16] 2008,[17] and 2009 editions of Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business as a leading individual in the area of Corporate/M&A and Private Equity for the District of Columbia,[4] as well as one of the "Leaders in their Field" by Chambers in 2014 in the area of Corporate/M&A and Private Equity. He was also recognized in the NACD Directorship 100: People to Watch list as one of the most influential people in corporate boardrooms[18] Sherman is a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for International Private Enterprise.[19] and is a part of the Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) Strategy 300 group as one of the world's leading IP strategists.

Professor

Andrew J. Sherman has served as an adjunct professor of business management, strategy and planning at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business for over 20 years.[20] During his time as an adjunct professor, Sherman has won several teaching awards including the Krowe Award for Teaching Excellence in 2000, 2004, and again in 2008.[21] For the past twelve years, Sherman has served as an adjunct professor in the MBA program at Georgetown University where he teaches courses on business growth, capital formation and entrepreneurship.[22] Additionally, Sherman recently became an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown Law.[23]

Author

A prolific author, Andrew J. Sherman is the author of 23 books focused on the legal and strategic aspects of business growth, mergers and acquisitions, capital formation, and the leveraging and licensing of intellectual property.[24] Sherman’s latest book Harvesting Intangible Assets compellingly describes innovation and leveraging intellectual property as a kind of farming.[25] Harvesting Intangible Assets explains the role of the company as intangible asset agrarian and provides instructions for planning, planting, nurturing, cultivating, preparing to harvest, and ultimately, selling a bumper crop by fully leveraging intangible assets and intellectual property.[25] Sherman discussed these ideas in his TedxTalk in January 2014.[26]

His book, Road Rules: Be the Truck. Not the Squirrel. was his first non-business book.[27] Road Rules is an inspirational book that applies the metaphor of commuting to work in your car to driving down the road of life.[28] Sherman discusses his inspiration and motivations for writing this book on The Connections Show audio podcast.[29] In September 2009, Sherman released a special Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) edition of "Road Rules: Be the Truck. Not the Squirrel."[30] This edition contains a foreword by MADD National President Laura Dean-Mooney and 40% of the proceeds of sale of all book sales at www.bethetruck.com will go directly to MADD.[31]

Mr. Sherman is also the founder of Grow Fast Grow Right, an education and training company with operations in the United States, Canada, India and Europe.[32]

In 2001 Fortune magazine named Andrew Sherman one of the Top Ten Minds in Small Business.[33]

In February 2006 Inc. magazine recognized Sherman as one of the 19 leading resources and advocates for growing companies in the nation.[2][34]

Sherman was selected as one of the fifty (50) leading business minds in the world for the “50 Lessons From 50 Leaders” webcast series, which included business leaders such as JW Marriott, Richard Branson, Earl Graves and William Harrison.[2] In addition, Sherman is recognized as a Hinge Visible Expert, a lawyer who has attained high visibility and expertise.[8]

Sherman is frequently interviewed on national and regional radio programs, including National Public Radio’s Talk of The Nation,[36] CBS News Radio, Associated Press (AP) Radio Network’s Business Minute, various shows broadcast over The Business Radio Network (simultaneously broadcast in over 100 cities) and is a regular guest on the WTEM 570 Smart Business show (with John Hrastar) and the Taking Care of Business show on WMAL (with Brian Roberts).[2]

In December 2009, Sherman participated in a two part interview with Portfolio.com as part of The Great Global Business Adventure series.[5] Sherman discussed globalization and its impact on small and mid-sized businesses.[37]

In 2011, Sherman's book Harvesting Intangible Assets received a glowing review from Chuck Frey, founder and editor of Innovation Tools and leading innovation blogger. The book has also been reviewed by the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council, in the Baltimore Examiner, in Washington Exec,[38] in Tech Bisnow,[39] and on Tech Cocktail.[25]

Sherman provides basic instructions for becoming an intangible asset agrarian in his post Betting the Farm on Portfolio.com.[5] Additionally, he highlights the relevance of present day knowledge on intellectual property and how it is vital for entrepreneurs to embrace this concept and understand it's legal and business ramifications.[5]
