Andrej Šustr (born November 29, 1990) is a Czech professional ice hockey defenceman, currently playing with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League (NHL). An undrafted player, Sustr made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2013 after playing three seasons of college hockey with the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks.

Playing career

Juniors & College

Šustr grew up in Plzeň in the Czech Republic but after finding little opportunity in his home town, was encouraged to move to the United States at age 17 to play junior hockey. He spent a year with the Kenai River Brown Bears of the North American Hockey League in 2008–09 before moving up to the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 2009–10.[1] The Nebraska–Omaha Mavericks men's ice hockey program recruited the six-foot-eight-inch tall defenceman to join their program in 2010.[2] He played three seasons of college hockey with the Mavericks, appearing in 111 games and recorded 7 goals and 45 points.[3]

Syracuse Crunch

An undrafted player, Šustr participated in NHL development camps with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers. After completing his junior season at Omaha-Nebraska, he signed a professional contract with the Lightning on March 21, 2013.[4] He made his NHL debut on March 29 against the New Jersey Devils.[5] He appeared in two games in Tampa before being assigned to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch.[6] He appeared in eight regular season games with Syracuse, scoring two goals and adding an assist,[3] while the Crunch reached the Calder Cup final against the Grand Rapids Griffins.[7]

Tampa Bay Lightning

Sustr scored his first NHL goal on April 5, 2014 against Kari Lehtonen of the Dallas Stars. On July 7, 2014, the Tampa Bay Lightning announced that it had re-signed Sustr to a one-year, one-way contract. Sustr made his Stanley Cup playoffs debut against the Montreal Canadiens in 2014, skating in three games. Additionally, Sustr appeared in 12 games with the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League, recording a goal and three assists. Sustr has appeared in 45 career NHL games, all with the Lightning over the past two seasons, recording a goal and eight points.[8] On February 16, 2015, Sustr skated in his 100th career NHL game in a Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.[9] On March 30, 2015, the Tampa Bay Lightning announced that Sustr would be out 1-2 weeks with an upper body injury, but was expected to return in time for the start of the playoffs.[10] On April 18, 2015, Sustr recorded his first career Stanley Cup Playoffs goal in a 5-1 Lightning win over the visiting Detroit Red Wings.[11]
