Ancona railway station, sometimes named Ancona Centrale,[2] is the main railway station of the Italian city of Ancona, in the Marches. It is the most important station of its region and is owned by the Ferrovie dello Stato, the national rail company of Italy.

History

The station was opened on 17 November 1861, when the railway line from Bologna was completed. The original structure, built in similar style to the one of Bologna Centrale, was heavily damaged during the Second World War and rebuilt few years later.

Structure and transport

The large station building is composed of two floors and the first one hosts the services for the travellers. The station is located in front of the docks and is a junction for a short line to Ancona Marittima, the station serving the Port of Ancona.

The station is electrified and served by several regional trains. For long distance transport it counts some InterCity, Express and EuroStar trains to Rome, Turin, Milan, Venice, Bari, Bolzano and almost all the most important Italian cities, excluding some as Naples and Palermo. The high-speed trains (EuroStar) link it principally with Rome,[3] Bologna and Pescara, and a direct connection with Genoa and Florence is guaranteed by some inter-regional trains. Periodically, mainly on summer, there are some international trains (Express and EuroCity) to Munich and Vienna.

Facilities

The station contains two small cafes and a tabacchi, as well as some small retail outlets. It is across the road from an Indian restaurant that remains open late. This restaurant is a good place to wait for late-night trains, as nothing in the station proper is open.
