Ancillae is run by the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, followers of the teachings of Saint Raphaela Mary. The school is located on the former estate of George Horace Lorimer, longtime editor of the Saturday Evening Post.

In 1947 the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart opened a private elementary school for girls named Ancillae Academy, from the Latin word for handmaid. In 1969, Ancillae Academy and Assumpta Academy merged becoming Ancillae-Assumpta Academy.[1]
