Baa Atoll - The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
Baa Atoll which is an administrative division of Maldives consists of three separate natural atolls. It is situated on the west of the Maldives atoll chain consisting 75 islands with 13 of them inhabited with a population of over 11,000. Baa Atoll was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in June 2011. As a biosphere reserve, Baa Atoll conserves and impacts significant biodiversity globally in its numerous reefs that demonstrate a long history of human interaction with the environment. It is the home for Maldives’ high diversity of reef animals, tropical fish, crustaceans and molluscs.
Anantara Kihavah Coral Adaption Programme
Coral reefs are very important in sustaining and increasing marine life while protecting the future health of the ocean. They also act as living barriers providing a natural defence against beach erosion and wave destruction. While constructing Anantara Kihavah Villas in November 2010, in its commitment to protect the environment, the resident marine biologist developed coral gardens[1] attaching them with sand covered iron frames in the middle of the over-water pool villas to encourage coral to grow faster than it would naturally. These environmentally friendly measures were taken to prevent more damage to the Baa Atoll’s fragile marine ecosystem. The coral reef is already showing signs of growth after experiencing a catastrophic disaster that occurred in 1998 destroying more than 90 percent of shallow coral reef in the Maldives when El Nino, a climatic deadly phenomenon raised the sea temperatures by 4.4 °C causing the reef to bleach. The marine life is progressively returning to its previous habitat. Anantara Kihavah Villas with its Coral Adoption Programme[2] invites and encourages nature lovers to participate in reef creation and contribute to the ongoing conservation effort by adopting a coral frame.[3]
Achievements
Anantara Kihavah Villas has strived to implement its commitment according to its vision to protecting and nurturing the environment, preserving local culture through education, innovation and empowerment.
