An tUltach
An tUltach (Irish pronunciation: [an̪ˠ t̪ˠʊl̪ˠt̪ˠax], meaning "the Ulster-person") is the official magazine of Comhaltas Uladh, the Ulster branch of Conradh na Gaeilge (the Gaelic League).
Established in 1924, it is the second-oldest Irish language magazine still in circulation and has subscribers in every county in Ireland and as far away as China.[1][2] An tUltach is funded by the arts council for Northern Ireland and Foras na Gaeilge.
An tUltach promotes any type of creative writing in Irish and has had such celebrated contributors as Seosamh Mac Grianna, Muiris Ó Droighneáin and Cathal Ó Searcaigh. Its first editor was the founder of Comhaltas Uladh, Fr. Lorcán Ó Muireadhaigh, and its current editor is Ciarán Ó Pronntaigh. The current manager is Seán Ó Murchadha.
The future of An tUltach was thrown into doubt by a communication from Foras na Gaeilge at the end of June 2013, indicating that its funding, through a block grant to Comhaltas Uladh, was to end with immediate effect.[3]
