Amity University is a private research university in India. Established by Ashok Chauhan, through his non-profit Ritnand Balved Education Foundation in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, members of the Chauhan family hold various leadership roles in the school.

History

Amity University was formed by Ashok Chauhan, the founder of the Ritnand Balved Education Foundation. Amity was India's first private university slated to implement reservations based on caste etc. for both faculty as well as students,[1] The school started was started in 2003 with an enrollment of 120 students. In 2011, it had 80,000 students in 240 programs. It now has more than 125,000 students from all over the world. [2]

Atul Chauhan is President of Ritnand Balved Education Foundation and Chancellor of Amity University.[3] Aseem Chauhan is the Additional President of the Foundation.[4] In 2007, USA Today reported that Ashok Chauhan, the founder of Amity, expected that generations of his family will control the school.[3]

Campuses

Amity University has main campuses in Noida, Lucknow, Jaipur, Gurgaon, Gwalior, Mumbai and Kolkata. However, only the Noida and Jaipur campus is presently listed by the University Grants Commission.[5] University Grants Commission accepted degrees must therefore be officially awarded by the Noida or Jaipur campus.[6]

Amity University has business schools across various cities in India under the name of Amity Global Business School,[7] in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gurgaon, Gwalior, Greater Noida, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Noida, Patna, and Pune.

Amity Law School in New Delhi is a law school owned by the Ritnand Balved Education Foundation, situated in the Amity University campus in Noida.[8] The law school is affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in New Delhi.

It has campuses in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gurgaon, Gwalior, Greater Noida, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Noida, Patna, Pune, London, Dubai, Singapore, Mauritius, New Jersey, and China.[9]

Accredation and recognition

India

Amity University Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, the Degrees awarded by them are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC),[10][11] Distance education programs are recognized by Distance Education Bureau (DEB).[12] Amity Noida was accredited by the NAAC (National Accreditation and Assessment Council) with grade A in 2012.[13] A number of management programs are accredited by ACBSP (Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs).[14]

Global

Amity University in London is recognized by Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education in the United Kingdom.[15]

Amity Global Business School, Singapore is registered with the Council for Private Education in Singapore and has been awarded EduTrust Provisional Certification.[15] Amity Global Business School, Singapore is also accredited by Accredited Services for International School, Colleges and Universities[15] in the United Kingdom, whose accreditation awards a mark of quality but not degree recognition or permission to award degrees independently.

Amity Institute of Higher Education in Mauritius is registered with the Tertiary Education Commission of Mauritius as a private institution with degree awarding powers.[16][15]

Amity University does not independently award degrees accredited in the United Arab Emirates. Amity University Dubai is accredited by Accredited Services for International School, Colleges and Universities[17] in the United Kingdom, whose accreditation awards a mark of quality but not degree recognition or permission to award degrees independently. However, the university awards degrees from Amity University in India.[17]

Rankings

The university received several rankings in the 2013 India Today college rankings. It was ranked India's #3 non-profit private university.[18] Its engineering school was ranked first amongst India's emerging colleges.[19] Its BBA program was ranked #2 in India.[20] The School of Communication was ranked #5 amongst Mass Communication programs in India.[21] The Fashion Design program was ranked seventh in India.[22]

Apart from the IITs and Delhi University, Amity University and five other Indian Institutes (Banaras Hindu University, Panjab University, Manipal University and Birla Institute of Technology and Science) made an entry to the Asian Universities Ranking 2014 published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). [23]

In 2014, Amity University has been named by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) as one of Asia's top 300 universities. It is one of 17 varsities from India to be included in this list (the others being 8 of the IITs, University of Delhi, University of Mumbai, University of Calcutta, Manipal University, Punjab University, University of Pune, BHU and Birla Institute of Technology and Science)[24] [25]

Activities and sponsorships

Amity University Hanging Hostel, H Block

Amity tied up with Red Bull Racing and Amity's F1 Racing Club has organised many events like bringing Red Bull Drivers to campus as well as displaying on campus the Red Bull Racing Car.[26][27]

Amity has tied up with Manchester United Football club to organise soccer school programs for students. The first one was held in April 2013[28] Amity was one of the sponsors presenting the online broadcasting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup on LIVsports.in.[29]

Amity has been partnering IPL since many years and has been the action replay partner on the broadcaster Sony as well as sponsor of teams like Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals.[30][31] The Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the brand ambassador for Amity University. Amity also signed a sponsorship deal with the cricketer of worth US$1 million which allows their logo to be placed on his cricket bat.[32]

In exchange for co-branding opportunities, Amity has trained 22,000 volunteers for the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi.[33][34]
