Amir Muqam (Urdu:چودھری امير مقام خان ; b. 25 July 1963), is a Pakistani politician, national conservative, and mechanical engineer who is currently serving as the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs since 29 October 2013.[1]
He is also the senior vice president of Pakistan Muslim League (N) for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa branch.[2]
Biography
Amir Muqam was born in Ghauri family of Gujjars in puran village near Shangla town, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, on 25 July 1963.[3] After matriculating from a local high school, Muqam enrolled at the University of Engineering and Technology in Peshawar in 1983 to study engineering.[3] In 1988, Muqam graduated from UET Peshawar with BSc in Mechanical engineering.[2][4]
After graduation, Muqam worked for the provincial government on several projects and practiced engineering profession for nearly 10 years.[3] Since 1989, Muqam has been a member of the Pakistan Engineering Council.[3]
In 1998, Muqam was elected as general secretary of the Cantonments Association till he remained until 2001.[4] In 2001, Muqam was elected unoppose as Nazim (Mayor) of Bengalin Union Council after participating in local government elections.[4]
Career in national politics
Muqam participated well on general elections held in 2002 on the Jamaat-e-Islami platform for NA-31 constituency.[5] The Jamaat-e-Islami is a far-right and ultraconservative party which was part of the far-right religious alliance, the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, opposing President Pervez Musharraf and his liberal PML(Q).[6] Muqam soon changed his mind and quickly defected to PML(Q) to support Musharraf; in justifying the floor crossing, Muqam maintained that he wanted to deliver to and improve the social conditions of his constituency that was not possible being part of the opposition.[6]
Muqam was brought up as a Minister of State for Water and Power and Political Affairs.[6] From 2002–07, Muqam managed to get some initial funding from the government for the development of his constituency located in Shangla which has the second lowest Human Development Index in the country.[6] He primarily gave attention to electrification, provision of telephone network and construction and improvement of roads within Shangla District.[6] Criticism grew on Muqam when he was appointed party president of the PML(Q) for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chapter, in spire of relatively inexperience in national politics.[6]
Muqam again successfully defended his constituency in the general elections held in 2008.[7] However, his relations grew bitter with party president of PML(Q), Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, who dissolved the PML(Q)'s Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chapter in March 2012. In a personal meeting with Shujaat Hussain, Muqam was personally dismissed. On the very next day, Muqam announced to join the PML(N) after holding a meeting with Nawaz Sharif.[8][9][10] He was soon appointed Senior vice President of the party, a position vacated by Javed Hashmi who quit PML-N and joined Imran Khan's Tehrik-e-Insaf a few months back.[11]
In 2013, Muqam decided not to contest from NA-31 constituency where he was elected twice in the past and tried on three other seats in Swat.[2] He was defeated in all the three constituencies. However, his brother Dr. Ibadullah got elected as Member of the National Assembly from Shangla.[2] Dr. Ibadullah had been District Chief of Shangla in the previous government.[12]
On 29 Octobe, 2013. Amir Muqam was appointed as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs with the status equal to the federal minister.[13]
