American University Preparatory School (commonly referred to as AUP) is a private four-year, co-educational boarding and day college preparatory high school for grades 9-12 located in Los Angeles, California, at the center of downtown Los Angeles. Its curricular focus is on STEAM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and Global Citizenship, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship in the 21st century. AUP will launch with an inaugural class of 150 highly selected 9th and 10th grade students from around the world in fall 2014.[1] [2]

History

American University Preparatory School was founded upon the vision to establish an academically rigorous and technology-rich blended learning environment where students would engage in project-based learning and domestic and international internships within an interdisciplinary STEAM, humanities, social science, and global leadership curriculum. Its faculty and academic advisory board consists of prominent university scholars, researchers, and administrators; K-12 education leaders; and business executives in the Los Angeles area. AUP’s board members[3] are affiliated with the Maremel Institute, USC Marshall School of Business, Warner Brothers, UCLA California Nanoscience Institute, UCLA School of Law, Beverly Hills Unified School District, California State University, Los Angeles' Pacific Rim Institute, and UCLA Medical School. AUP’s leadership team and faculty[4] hold bachelors, masters, doctorates, and post-doctoral degrees from prestigious institutions including UCLA, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, USC, Boston College, George Washington University, The Ohio State University, University of Minnesota, Washington University School of Medicine, and Harvard University.

Global Citizenship

Courses are taught by teachers with subject-matter expertise in global studies as well as in conjunction with guest lecturers from the fields of public health, environmental science, international studies, political science, economics, and business leadership. The global citizenship course is divided into two semesters: In the first semester of each grade, students gain a theoretical and conceptual knowledge of global issues; in the second semester, students conduct research and design projects to address a global need. In 9th grade, students study Ethics/Understanding Global Societies; in 10th grade, Global Health and Environmental Health Concerns; in 11th grade, Global Policies and Economics; and in 12th grade, Global Leadership and Entrepreneurship.
