American College of Education is an accredited, for-profit college based in Indianapolis, Indiana, delivering online Master and Doctor of Education degree programs.[1]

American College of Education grants Graduate Degrees in a variety of diploma programs, including a Master of Education in Educational Leadership, Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with ESL Specialization, Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with Bilingual Specialization and a Master of Education in Educational Technology.[2] Ed.D. and Ed.S. in Leadership degrees were launched in 2013.[3] All courses are taught online. Unlike many other postgraduate level teaching programs, American College of Education does not require its applicants to take the GRE.

History

American College of Education was formally incorporated in Illinois on February 25, 2005. Following incorporation, it purchased the intellectual property (the academic programming) of Barat College. American College of Education immediately applied to The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to continue the accreditation of Barat College under its new name and ownership. The Higher Learning Commission approved this request in March 2006.

Graduate Degree Programs

American College of Education offers five Master's Degree programs:

Master of Education in Educational Leadership: Focused on meeting the needs of aspiring school principals and district leaders, this degree centers on an application-based curriculum that aligns with national standards and core competencies.[4]

Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction: Designed to help educators become effective teacher-leaders within their school communities, this degree aligns with the five core propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards: a commitment to students and their learning; knowledge about the subjects taught and how to teach those subjects to students; responsibility for managing and monitoring student learning; dedication to thinking systematically about one's practice and learning from experience; and engaging members of learning communities.[5]

Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with ESL Specialization: The specialization in English as a Second Language focuses on theories of language acquisition, cultural implications, strategies that promote cultural understanding and teaching practices that meet the needs of English language learners.[6]

Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a Bilingual Specialization: The Bilingual specialization prepares educators to work effectively in a bilingual setting and provide leadership in curriculum and instruction in their schools. The program focuses on instructional methods and materials for teaching language and content to English Language Learners; the importance of culture in addressing learning needs; testing and evaluation; and developing curriculum for English language learners.[7]

Master of Education in Educational Technology: The Master of Education in Educational Technology program, leading to a Technology Specialist Endorsement, focuses on delivering the skills to support student learning through the use of technology, as well as provide professional development/technical assistance to teachers and other school personnel. Candidates in this program learn how to use educational technology to lead in their classrooms, their schools and in their districts.[8]

Doctor of Education in Leadership: The Doctor of Education program is for leaders who seek to become change agents from their local communities to the regional, state, and national levels. Leaders from all disciplines are admitted, including education, business, nonprofit management and community leadership.[9]

Education Specialist in Leadership: The online Ed.S. is a post-master's degree that does not require a dissertation. All Ed.S. coursework is applicable to the Ed.D. in Leadership. The program provides an excellent forum for problem solving and sharing current leadership issues. The culture of collaboration within the program is an invaluable resource for leaders working in fields such as education, nonprofit administration, business and public service.[10]

Accreditation

American College of Education is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.[11] The Professional Education Programs (M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a Specialization in ESL/Bilingual, M.Ed. in Educational Technology) are also accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC).
