The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit professional association in the United States dedicated to facilitating psychiatric care for children and adolescents. Established in 1953, the Academy is headquartered in Washington, D.C.[1][2] Various levels of membership are available to physicians specialized in child psychiatry or pediatrics, as well as medical students interested in the field, in the United States and abroad.[3]

Mission

The Academy's official mission, adopted in 1994 with later emendations, is to "Promote the healthy development of children, adolescents, and families through research, training, prevention, comprehensive diagnosis and treatment and to meet the professional needs of child and adolescent psychiatrists throughout their careers."[4]

Publications

Since 1962, the AACAP has published its monthly journal, Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (JAACAP).

Concerns About Scientific Misconduct and Fraud

Given the journal's close relationship with the pharmaceutical industry, there have been concerns about the scientific and moral integrity of the industry-sponsored clinical trials published in the journal. The JAACAP editorship has repeatedly ignored demands for retraction of the infamous study 329.

Reporting on Study 329 sponsored by then SmithKline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline) Keller et al. (2001) [5] concluded that paroxetine was “generally well tolerated and effective" but study 329 was, in fact, negative for efficacy and positive for harm [6] . Healthy Skepticism called upon the editor to retract this article, but to date he has refused to acknowledge fraud or to retract. According to Healthy Skepticism, this raises questions about other industry-sponsored clinical trials reported in the journal and the editor's commitment to enforcing the journal's conflict of interest policy.
