Alrewas (awl-ree-was) is a large village and civil parish within Lichfield District, in Staffordshire, England.[3][4]

Location

The village is located on the A38 road, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Lichfield, and is just inside the national forest line.

According to the English Place-Name Society the name means Alluvial land growing with alder trees[5] (Anglo-Saxon Alor-wæsse).

The postcode is DE13. Although DE is the Derbyshire prefix and Alrewas is in Staffordshire, Alrewas used to be part of South Derbyshire.

Alrewas lies at the confluence of the Trent and Mersey Canal and the River Trent. It is adjacent to the A38 road, which follows the line of Ryknild Street, a Roman road.

In the 2011 Census Alrewas had a population of around 2,852.[1] Until 1 April 2009 it was part of the civil parish of Alrewas and Fradley, but is now a parish in its own right.[6][7][8] Situated close to Alrewas are the villages of Wychnor, Barton-under-Needwood, Fradley and Kings Bromley.

Sited just east of Alrewas is the National Memorial Arboretum, dedicated to remembering those lost due to warfare since the Second World War.

The village was previously the seat of Bishop of Lichfield.

The Reverend John Allen is from Arizona and has been serving God in Alrewas since 2001.

Culture and arts

The village runs the annual Alrewas Festival during the summer. It is a free eight day festival that takes place every two years and is made up of workshops, performances exhibitions and events in Alrewas village. It showcases local artistic and artisan talents. As well as this there are many workshops that everyone can take part in from silk painting to film making, there is a lot of fund raising that has to happen in order for this event to run smoothly this includes, auctions and sales. It culminates in a Sunday daytime to evening event of live music, comedy and interactive art events in Alrewas Park which attracts thousands of party-goers from the surrounding villages and towns.

Each year, there is a village show called the Alrewas Show. It is a registered charity. It includes a walking carnival procession, galloping acrobatics, a falconry display, miniature steam display, punch and judy show, livestock display, fairground rides and attractions, trade stands, classic cars, farm machinery and musical entertainment.

The National Memorial Arboretum

Alrewas is home to The National Memorial Arboretum, the UK's year-round centre of Remembrance. The Arboretum honours the fallen, recognises service and sacrifice, and fosters pride in the country of England. It is a living and lasting memorial. It commemorates and celebrates those who have given their lives in the service of their country, all who have served and suffered as a result of conflict. The Arboretum is a charity run by staff and volunteers, and part of The Royal British Legion family. They receive around 300,000 visitors a year, including Service personnel, veterans, students of all ages, and groups. There are over 200 special events held there each year. The Act of Remembrance, including a Silence, is observed daily in the Millennium Chapel. The Arboretum is home to the striking Armed Forces Memorial which commemorates those who have been killed on duty or as a result of terrorism from the end of the Second World War to the current conflict in Afghanistan.

Education

There is only one school in Alrewas - All Saints Primary School. It is a small primary school which is only slightly over single form entry.

Public Houses

William IV Paul and Angela run an attractive and lively village hostelry, originally three cottages but converted into a pub in the 1830s. The interior features a single large L-shaped room, where the low beamed ceiling in the older part contrasts with a high ceiling, with exposed rafters, in the airy, more recently modified section. Open mic night 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of month (except December); occasional live music and quiz nights.

The Crown A small but perfectly formed and decorated village pub turned gastropub. It boasts beautiful decor and feature wall paper. This pub creates an intimate dining experience with its cleverly positioned tables and booths, luxurious furnishings and great menu.

George and Dragon A large brick build with small seating area outside on the street and a new pub garden at the rear. The interior is a nesting of 5 rooms with a nice fireplace in the one room. Tap beer with three handpulls.
