Alresford railway station in Essex, England, is on the Sunshine Coast Line in the village of Alresford, 7½ miles (12 km) southeast of Colchester. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by the train operating company Abellio Greater Anglia.
History
Opened by the Tendring Hundred Railway in 1866, then owned by the Great Eastern Railway, it became part of the London and North Eastern Railway during the Grouping of 1923. The line then passed on to the Eastern Region of British Railways upon nationalisation in 1948.
When sectorisation was introduced, the station was served by Network SouthEast until the Privatisation of British Rail.
As of February 2006, the original station house is almost derelict but is available to let. Tickets are sold from a small cabin close to Station Road. Until the level crossing gates were replaced with automatic barriers as part of the upgrade of the line in 2008/09,[1] the ticket clerk was also responsible for moving the level crossing gates each time a train passed.
Prior to electrification of the line, the ticket clerk operated the level crossing gates, home and distant signals on both the up and down lines, his own level crossing gate lock and the one for the level crossing a short distance down the line, at all times that the signal box was unmanned. Edward Burbage fulfilled this duty for nearly 50 years.
