Alpari Group is a multinational foreign exchange, precious metals and CFD broker with headquarters in several countries.[1][2] The company UK entity applied for insolvency on January 19, 2015, following heavy losses after the Swiss National Bank unexpectedly removed the franc's ceiling against the euro.[3]

History

The company was originally established in Kazan, Russia, in 1998 by Daniel Skowronski, who became the first CEO, and Andrey Vedikhin, Andrey Dashin and Gleb Petrov. Alpari enabled investors to trade on various electronic trading platforms, including MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, which allows traders to apply automated trading strategies.[4]

United Kingdom

The company established a number of offices and Alpari (UK) was founded in 2004 as part of the global association of Alpari companies.[1] It became regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in September 2006.[2] The company opened and closed several branches in other countries. Cyprus office (via Alpari Financial Services Ltd.) was opened in 2010 and the CySEC license was acquired that year. The company renounced its licence in December 2012 and closed office in February 2013.[5][6][7] Alpari (UK) entered Indian market in 2008 by incorporating its subsidiary, Alpari Forex (India) Pvt. Ltd., in Mumbai.[8] The company left India in March 2014.[9] Alpari Deutschland was established in 2009 in Frankfurt, Germany. It was restructured for direct control by Alpari (UK) in 2013.[10] Chinese Representative Office was opened in Shanghai, China, in 2008.[11] A subsidiary in Tokyo, Japan, was established in 2011 as Alpari (Japan) KK.[12]

For UK residents, the company also offered financial spread betting on Forex and indices.[2] In addition to trading products, Alpari provided market research tools such as trading reports and charts. The company served retail, professional and institutional clients.[1]

In September 2013, Alpari (UK) introduced currency and spot metal binary options trading via OptionTrader platform.[13] Alpari became a member of International Swaps and Derivatives Association (as Alpari Limited) in October 2013.[14]

In April 2014, Alpari closed down its Indian operations that had employed about 60 people to prepare the company for an expected IPO in the following year. The companies received a large part of revenue from Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States which have been its core market since its foundation.[15]

On 16 January 2015, it was widely reported that Alpari has entered insolvency following heavy losses the previous day when the Swiss National Bank unexpectedly removed the franc's ceiling against the euro.[16][17] On 17 January 2015, Alpari clarified on its website that it has not entered a formal insolvency process,[18] although its board of directors were considering all options including a sale.[19] On January 19, Alpari (UK) Ltd. applied for formal insolvency and the English High Court appointed a special administrators from KPMG under Special Administration Regime.[20] IronFX, a Cyprus-based foreign exchange trading company, confirmed its bid on Alpari in January 2015.[21][22]

Russia

Alpari-Broker Ltd. (Russian: ООО «Альпари-Брокер») was established as legal entity in September 2008 in Kazan, Russia. It is licensed as a professional participant of the equity markets for providing brokerage, dealership and money managing services by the Central Bank of Russia.[23][24][25] Additionally, it is a member of CRFIN (the Center for Regulating OTC Financial Instruments and Technologies), a self-regulatory organization created by Forex brokers.[26] Andrey Dashin, the chairman of Alpari, is also on the Founder Board of this SRO.[27]

New Zealand

Alpari NZ Limited was established in October 2010. It is a member of the Financial Dispute Resolution scheme and is registered as a financial services provider in the Financial Service Providers Register of New Zealand.[28][29]

Saint Vincent and Grenadines

Alpari Group has registered its offshore company, Alpari Limited, in Saint Vincent and Grenadines in 2012.[30] Alpari Limited is also a member of an SRO The Financial Commission.[31]

Mauritius

The group's presence in another offshore jurisdiction, Mauritius, is provided by Alpari International Limited that was incorporated in March 2014.[32]

Dubai

Alpari Middle East DMCC is a group's company in the United Arab Emirates. It was established in February 2011 and is regulated by the Securities & Commodities Authority of the UAE.[33] Alpari ME DMCC is also a member of DGCX.[34]

United States

Alpari US Llc was established in New York City in April 2007. It had its NFA membership approved in November 2007.[35] The US company was closed and its retail clients moved to FXCM in October 2013.[36]

Sponsorship

Alpari have used sponsorship to promote their business, these have included:

In 2010, Russian company of Alpari sponsored FC Spartak Moscow of the Russian Football Premier League.[37]

In 2011, Alpari (UK) were the headline sponsor of the London Investor FOREX show at Earls Court.[38]

During the same year, Alpari sponsored NBA's New Jersey Nets and New York Knicks, NHL's New York Rangers, and the Madison Square Garden indoor arena.[39][40][41][42]

In February 2012, Alpari (US) became title sponsor of the World Match Racing Tour, renaming it to the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT), for a five-year partnership.[43] The sponsorship has moved to Alpari (UK) following Alpari (US) close-down in October 2013.[36] The deal ended prematurely following the company's entry into insolvency in January 2015.[44]

Alpari sponsored Sergey Karjakin chess grandmaster in 2012 and 2013.[45][46]

In February 2013, Alpari (UK) became the shirt sponsors of West Ham United. The sponsorship started in the 2013/14 season and is due to run for three years.[47] The sponsorship ended with Alpari's insolvency in January 2015.[48]

In April 2013, Alpari Group sponsored MENA 11th Forex Show in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) as a strategic partner.[49]

In the same month, Alpari (UK) formed Team Alpari FX, a professional sailing team led by former world champion skipper Adam Minoprio of New Zealand.[50] For 2014, the team is led by Australian skipper Keith Swinton.[51]

In October 2013, Alpari Group signed a sponsorship deal with Russian Biathlon Union.[52]

Alpari sponsored FC Zenit Saint Petersburg in seasons 2014 and 2015 of the Russian Premier League.[53]
