Alma Bryant High School is an Alabama high school located in Irvington, Alabama, United States off State Highway 188, midway between Grand Bay, Alabama and Bayou La Batre, Alabama.
Founding
The school was formed in 1998 by combining Alba High School (in Bayou La Batre) and Grand Bay High School (formerly called Mobile County High School) (in Grand Bay). The school was named for Alma Bryant, an influential south Mobile County educator who had taught for a period of time at both schools.[1][2]
Athletics and activities
The archery team has been a top finisher in the AASP tournaments since 2005.[3] School athletic teams are known as the Hurricanes.
Award winning clubs and organizations include Student Government Association, Scholars Bowl, Hi-Q, Kicking Cane Dancers, SWAT, and YAC (Youth Activist Coalition)-a non-profit community service organization.
Since 2014, Bryant High has been in the AHSAA Class 7A. Prior to the 2014-15 School year they were in Class 6A, formerly the largest class.[4]
During the first year of the school's existence, 1998–99, the football team attained seven consecutive shut-outs in the first seven games with eight total shutouts for the year. The team was ultimately beaten in the third round of the playoffs; however, those records made the team rank as the 8th most consecutive shutouts and the 14th most season shutouts statewide, at that time.[5]
