Allakh-Yun (Russian: Алла́х-Юнь; Sakha: Ааллаах Үүн) is an urban locality (a settlement) and a former gold-mining settlement in Ust-Maysky District of the Sakha Republic, Russia. It still officially holds its urban status despite having lost almost its entire population during the first decade of the 2000s. Population: 96(2010 Census);[1] 306(2002 Census);[3] 2,183(1989 Census).[4]

Geography

It lies about 450 kilometers (280 mi) east-southeast of Yakutsk, the capital of the republic, in the Yudoma-Maya Highlands on the right bank of the Allakh-Yun River, after which it was named. The distance to Ust-Maya, the administrative center of the district, is about 200 kilometers (120 mi) earth-northeast.

History

It was founded in the 1930s as the first gold prospecting center in the area and was granted urban-type settlement status in 1937. The surrounding area was separated out of Ust-Maysky District in 1940 as Allakh-Yunsky District, with the administrative center in Allakh-Yun. In 1948, the administrative center was moved to Eldikan and the district was merged back into Ust-Maysky District in 1953.

With the cessation of mining activities in the 1990s, almost the entire population of the settlement left, dropping from 2,183 inhabitants in 1989 to only 96 in 2010.

Infrastructure

Allakh-Yun is at the end of a 100-kilometer (62 mi) long road, which connects to the road from Eldikan to Yugoryonok. This is its only connection to the outside world, since the closure of the settlement's small airport in the 1990s.
