Alfredo Angulo López (born August 11, 1982 in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico) is a Mexican professional boxer and the former interim WBO Light Middleweight Champion.[1][2] Angulo also participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics for Mexico.[3] Alfredo is signed to Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions.[4]

Amateur career

He qualified for the Olympic Games by ending up in second place at the 1st AIBA American 2004 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Tijuana, Mexico.[5] At the Olympics Angulo lost to Andy Lee, by a score of 38:23.[6] Angulo also has an amateur win over former WBO Light Welterweight champion Timothy Bradley.[7]

Sparring partners

He has sparred with some of the best fighters in the world, which include Contender Jesus Soto Karass, Quadruple World Champion Roy Jones Jr., three-time Welterweight champion Antonio Margarito, two-time Light Middleweight champion Fernando Vargas and former unified Light Welterweight world champion and current WBC Silver welterweight title holder, Amir Khan.

Professional career

Alfredo Angulo is an all-action fighter,[8] who turned professional in Arizona.[9] The Mexican was considered by many boxing analysts to be the next Light Middleweight World Champion. [10] On May 17, 2008, he defeated Richard Gutierrez inside of five rounds to take his professional record to 13 wins, 10 by way of knockout.[11] On October 4, 2008, Angulo defeated Ukraine's Andrey Tsurkan (26-3, 17 KO). Angulo, from the beginning of the round was relentless, averaging over 100 punches per round. He stopped Tsurkan in the 11th round when referee Tony Krebs stepped in.[12] Angulo was scheduled to fight former champion Ricardo Mayorga on February 14, 2009. However, Mayorga pulled out ten days before the fight after demanding a larger purse.[13] Angulo fought former NABO light Welterweight champion Cosme Rivera as a replacement and defeated him by fifth round technical knockout.[14]

He suffered his first professional loss to Puerto Rican fighter Kermit Cintron in early May 30.

Interim WBO Light Middleweight title

In November 2009 Angulo defeated an undefeated Harry Joe Yorgey to claim the interim WBO light middleweight title.[15]

Although Angulo finished off Yorgey in the third round, he scored a knockdown in the second round while landing 58 of 108 punches (according to CompuBox). A huge right hand did the initial damage as he hurt Yorgey against the ropes. But Angulo did not let him off the hook and continued to pound away for the knockout win.

First Title Defense

Angulo knocked out Joel Julio in the 11th round of their bout on April 24, 2010.[16] Angulo stopped Joel Julio with a right cross midway through the 11th round to retain the WBO interim 154-pound title. Angulo earned his third straight KO victory after his only defeat against Kermit Cintron last May. Angulo was slightly more aggressive than the counterpunching Julio, consistently attacking and peppering the Colombian with combinations, including a nasty series of blows in the eighth round.

Angulo vs. Alcine

According to Fight News, the WBO has ordered a title bout between then unbeaten current WBO light middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-1, 23 KO's) and Angulo. The promoters for both Angulo and Dzinziruk have two weeks come up with an agreement for the fight. If not, then the fight will be brought up for a purse bid.[17] On July 17, 2010, Angulo scored a first round stoppage over former WBA Super Welterweight Champion Joachim "Ti-Joa" Alcine (32-1, 19 KOs) of Montreal.[18] Angulo won the vacant WBC Continental Americas Light Middleweight Title.[19]

Angulo vs. Kirkland

On November 5, 2011, Angulo would face off against contender James Kirkland. Kirkland had been regarded as a top prospect for years, but his continual brush ins with the law, in addition to his first round knockout loss (in which he was dropped thrice) against light punching fringe contender Nobuhiro Ishida meant many felt Kirkland was a finished commodity, and additionally most at ringside felt that Kirkland's swarming style combined with his notorious inconsistency in the ring would be tailor made for the hard punching Angulo. At first this appeared to be the case, as Kirkland started aggressively, backing Angulo into the corner and hammering away with hard shots before Angulo dropped Kirkland with a single accurate right hand. At this point Angulo took over, backed Kirkland into a corner, and threw close to 100 punches at Kirkland who appeared only interested in surviving. Suddenly Kirkland recovered late in the round and backed Angulo up, who appeared to fade a bit after his effort. Kirkland would then drop Angulo with a nasty combination (the first time Angulo has ever been down in his entire career). At this point Kirkland completely took over the fight, pummeling the tough Angulo at will, while Angulo only attempted to survive and land one big shot to turn the fight around. Eventually the referee would stop the fight in the sixth round after Angulo was knocked to the ropes and rendered nearly defenseless by the tireless Kirkland, giving him his second loss and first by stoppage.

Return

On August 20, 2011 Angulo made quick work of Joseph Gomez for his first fight in 13 months. He stopped the New Mexico-based journeyman in the first round with a straight right-left hook to the midsection followed by a cuffing right cross to the back of the head.[20] Angulo's visa problems, prevented him from fighting in the U.S., made the beef with Shaw a moot point.[21]

Immigration issues and return

Angulo's was living in the U.S with an expired work visa. He turned himself in to the immigration detention center in El Centro, California to resolve his issue. He was detained there for over 7 months and released on August 14, 2012 and allowed to work and practice boxing.

Angulo vs. Lara

Following two wins over middling opposition (including an unimpressive unanimous decision over former junior welterweight fringe contender, whom the hard hitting Angulo was never even able to hurt), Angulo was given the opportunity to fight Erislandy Lara for the WBA Interim Light Middleweight Title. Angulo started off very well, knocking down the usually durable Lara in the fourth and ninth rounds to keep the scorecards close. Despite his continued aggressiveness, the southpaw Lara would land several consecutive left straights in the tenth round, forcing Angulo to retire as a grotesque hematoma grew around his left eye. Angulo claimed he had been thumbed, but this was unlikely as Lara's gloves lacked thumbs. A fracture was initially suspected, but later tests confirmed no physiological damage to the orbital bone.

Angulo vs. Alvarez

Despite losing his most recent fight, Angulo was given the chance to combat rising star Saul Alvarez. Angulo's tenacity and ferocity were considered to be the perfect combination to Alvarez's more deliberate and combination oriented style. The fight however was a brutally one sided blow out in Alvarez's favor. While never appearing truly hurt, Angulo appeared lethargic, and his offense was completely neutralized by Alvarez's solid defense and vicious combinations. Despite mounting something of a comeback in round eight, the fight returned to its normal pattern in round nine, and following a brutal uppercut in round ten referee Tony Weeks called a stop to the bout, awarding Alvarez a TKO victory.

Angulo would move up to middleweight in the hopes of starting anew, claiming that making the 154 pound limit was too much of a strain on his body. His next opponent was against middleweight journeyman James de la Rosa. Despite Angulo's greater experience at the top level, he was dominated from the very beginning, including suffering the second knockdown of his career. Angulo demonstrated none of the power or tenacity that he had previously in his career, leading many to call for him to retire.
