Alfred Francis Molamure

Sir Alfred Francis Molamure (commonly known as A. F. Molamure or Sir Francis Molamure) was a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and also the first speaker of the Parliament. The first parliament, known as the First State Council, was ceremonially opened on 10 July 1931, and Molamure was elected as the speaker three days earlier on 7 July.[1] Molamure won the election for the speaker with 58 votes against his opponent's 41.[2] He resigned from the post on 10 December 1934[3] for personal reasons.[1] He was again elected as speaker after the House of Representatives was introduced after constitutional changes.[3] While presiding over the parliament, Molamure died on 24 January 1951 before his term of office ended.[2] He was educated at S. Thomas' College, and played for his school cricket team.[4] Molamure was married to Adeline Meedeniya who became the first female member of the State Council. She was the daughter of J. H. Meedeniya Adigar, member of the Legislative Council.[5][6]
