Alexis Rassine
Alexis Rassine (26 July 1919 - 25 July 1992) was a Lithuanian-born British ballet dancer, who enjoyed his greatest success in the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born Alexis Rayes in Kaunas, Lithuania on 26 July 1919.[1] His family moved to Cape Town, South Africa when he was ten.[2]
Along with Robert Helpmann, he danced leading roles at Sadler's Wells Ballet, and was a regular partner of Nadia Nerina.[1]
Rassine created roles in Frederick Ashton's The Quest (1943), Les Sirenes (1946) and Homage to the Queen (1953); in Helpmann's Hamlet (1942), Miracle in the Gorbals (1944) and Adam Zero (1946), and in Ninette de Valois's Promenade (1943) and Don Quixote (1950).[1]
He died in Crawley on 25 July 1992.[2]
