Alexa Dectis (born March 5, 1993) is an American television actress, pop singer, songwriter, and inspirational activist who rose to fame after the release of her album Fairy Tale.[1] She has been an ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association since age five. Affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy, she uses a wheelchair.
Personal life
Dectis was born on March 5, 1993 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy at 16 months and has been in an electric wheelchair since age two.[2] At age five, Dectis began practicing meditation and realized that her purpose in life was to inspire others.
Career
Using the performing industry as an avenue to reach audiences, her mother took her to New York City to begin acting.[3] After enrolling in acting classes, Dectis appeared in numerous television shows, commercials, and movies including PBS Kids, Scholastic Books, Sesame Street, The Guiding Light, and the movie Admissions starring Tina Fey .[4] Always interested in music, Alexa wrote her first song at age eleven. Although she never released the track, Dectis wrote all of the songs on her album "Fairy Tale", released in August 2009. Many of the lyrics were inspired by her disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy. "Progression", the emotional last track on the album, was written about the rapid progression of the deterioration associated with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. When Alexa finished singing the song at a fundraiser, she raised over $20,000 towards Spinal Muscular Atrophy research. Currently, Alexa has been writing new songs but has released no information on a new album.
