Catherine "Cathy" Cruz Gonzaga (born January 16, 1988), better known as Alex Gonzaga after her name changed in 2008, is a Filipina actress, author, comedian and television host. Her nickname, Alex, came from the role of a character she played in ABS-CBN sitcom's Let's Go and Gokada Go!.
Background
Early life and Personal life
Catherine Cruz Gonzaga was born on January 16, 1988, in Taytay, Rizal to Carlito Gonzaga, the incumbent Vice-Mayor of Taytay, and Crisanta Cruz. Gonzaga has an older sister named Toni Gonzaga, also working in the showbiz industry. Gonzaga graduated from the University of Asia and the Pacific with a Master of Arts in Education degree, majoring in Child Development and Education.[1]
Career
Gonzaga started her career on ABS-CBN's sitcom, Let's Go where she played the role of Alex, which also became her nickname. She lasted the role until the series fourth season called Gokada Go!. After her departure from the series, she joined the cast of different shows on the same network, such as Pangarap Na Bituin, Your Song and My Girl.
She transferred to TV5 and became one of the main hosts of the talk show Juicy!, and also received a lead role on Babaeng Hampaslupa where she played the role of the title character. Further roles on the network include BFGF, P.S. I Love You and Enchanted Garden.[2][3]
Breakthrough
Gonzaga returned to ABS-CBN and became the media correspondent on The Voice of the Philippines, where she co-hosts along with her sister.[4] She became another addition to the cast of the gag-show Banana Nite.[5] Gonzaga was then cast two roles on the anthology series Maalaala Mo Kaya, where she played the role of Pinky, which was featured in the episode "Walis"; and Gelyn Tulabing, which was featured in the episode "Wedding Booth".[6]
From July to November, she played the lead role in Pure Love, a remake of the 2011 South Korean TV series, 49 Days.[7] This is Gonzaga's first major project since returning to ABS-CBN. She also played a main role in the film, The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin which was released in December that officially entry to the 40th Metro Manila Film Festival.
She will be starring in the 2015 TV series, Inday Bote, a TV adaptation of the film of the same name with his Kapamilya leading man Matteo Guidicelli. It is set to premiere in March 2015.[8]
The year 2015, Gonzaga released her debut album "I am Alex G" with its hit carrier single "Panaginip Lang". Alex Gonzaga will also have her first concert at April 25, 2015, entitled as "AG from the East: The Unexpected Concert".
Book
Alex Gonzaga released a book entitled Dear Alex, Break na Kami. Paano? Love Catherine on September 2014 under ABS-CBN Publishing Inc.[9]
Gonzaga is set to team up with Luis Manzano and James Reid for the movie adaptation of her bestselling book. It is expected to be released on the third quarter of 2015.
Pinoy Big Brother: All In
In the launching of the 5th regular season of Pinoy Big Brother, Gonzaga was announced to become a celebrity housemate, along with collegiate athlete Michele Gumabao and actress Jane Oineza, in the last-minute of the episode.[10]
In the May 3, 2014 episode, it was revealed that Gonzaga was actually a celebrity houseguest, the same twist that happened to her sister in an earlier season. However, Big Brother tasked her to avoid revealing that she was a houseguest from the other official housemates.[11]
