Aleš Mertelj (born 22 March 1987 in Kranj) is a Slovenian footballer who is a midfielder of club Maribor in the Slovenian PrvaLiga. He is also a member of the Slovenia national football team.

Club career

Mertelj started his career playing for Triglav Kranj and stayed there until he was acquired by Slovenian top division club, Koper. He played for Koper during the 2008–09 season, making 35 league appearances for the club and scoring three goals in the process.[1] He then transferred to Maribor and is part of the ten times Slovenian champions ever since.[1]

International career

Mertelj made his international debut on 26 May 2012 on a friendly match between Slovenia and Greece, coming in as a late substitute.[2]

Personal life

Mertelj was born in Kranj in the northwestern Slovenia and has one brother and one sister.[3] His older brother Sandi is a professional waterpolo player.[3]
