Al-Shamiya (Arabic: الشامية) Iraqi city located in Al-Qādisiyyah Governorate ,roughly 147 km south of Baghdad on the Al-Shamiya river (branch of Euphrates). Al-Shamiya date back to Sumerian times but a modern city established in 1822 during Ottoman era, named (Hamidya) after name of Abdul Hamid II,its name converted to current name (Al-Shamiya) after establish kingdom of Iraq . population of Al-Shamiya has been grew quickly from 189.000 inhabitants in 1997 to 230974 in 2007[2] (estimated 300.000 inhabitants 2014) .whole population Shia settling in the area since hundreds years,they descendant of historic arabic tribe Nukha.
Al-Shamiya is located in fertile,irrigated,drained and alluvial plain within middle Euphrates region.The area surrounded Al-Shamiya notable for its crops especially rice,dates,and wheat.
