Akhtar Colony

Akhtar Colony (Urdu: اختر کالونی) is one of the neighbourhoods of Jamshed Town in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.[1]

Akhtar Colony is a population where, in view of ethnicity, includes: There are several ethnic groups in Manzoor Colony and they include: Muhajirs, Punjabis, Sindhis, Kashmiris, Seraikis, Pakhtuns, Balochis, Memons, Bohras, Ismailis, etc. Hence, almost the composition is very well mixed up and the practised language is URDU. The population of Jamshed Town is estimated to be nearly one million and as over 99% of the population is Muslim.

The area of Akhtar Colony, in perspective of site plan, has been divided into 5 Sectors namely A,B,C,D,E. with 17 Mosques, 11 Churches, 15 Private Schools, 11 Government Offices, 1 Public Library, 10 Private Clinics, 2 Hospitals, 5 Government Schools. However, due to influence of various vested groups, the development efforts face rigorous hurdles and the pace is moved down as compare to the past. Thanks to those literate people who upon achieving their goals in life just moved out to other vicinities without delivering leaving behind their childhood neighbourhood when and where they would have played a key role in upbringing the community according to their wishes.

Perhaps, another advantage to the present people of Akhtar Colony is that it is situated where services of Hospital like Defence Healthcare Centre, PNS Shifa Hospital, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, National Hospital, etc., are located very near i.e. within 15 minutes drive. Pakistan Railways Karachi Cantt. Station is also situated within 15 minutes drive from the locality and Jinnah International Airport is at 30 minutes drive. One of the busiest Main Road viz. Korangi Road towards National Highway passes by sector A of Akhtar Colony. The Neighbouring localities include Azam Basti, Defence View, D.H.A. Society Phase 1 and 2 ext., Junejo Town, Kashmir Colony, and Manzoor Colony. Sea View Beach is nearly located at 10 minutes drive from Akhtar Colony.

The literacy rate of the people of Akhtar Colony was very low for past few decades, but now it is increasing rapidly. Nowadays, Advocates, Bank Employees, Businessmen, Doctors, Engineers, Media and Press Employees, News Reporters, Politicians, etc. are the residents of Akhtar Colony.

As far as problems are concerned, the main problem arises with the Water and Sewerage Board (KW & SB), as the need of the locality has arisen with the passage of time due to increase in population. Simply, the water supply has been measured quite low than the requirement of the increasing people. Sometimes, the patience of the peace loving people of Akhtar Colony is tried on this particular issue where some elements provoke for indecency as the frustration keeps on moving among them due to insufficient and fake promises by the concerned government institution.

Another main issue is with the Transporters operating at the main entrance of Akhtar Colony diluting the atmosphere with their heavy machinery vehicles like loaders, trucks, water bowsers, and heavy construction machinery which can be seen illegally parked on both sides of the service lane of the main road of Akhtar Colony. Hence, obstructing the flow of traffic as well as pedestrians towards Akhtar Colony and adjacent areas. Many accidents causing fatal injuries have been observed in the past but the group has some influence over the people that still they have not been moved to the suburbs of the city for their operation even upon the complaints registered against them.

However, administrative negligence is also evident of the Karachi Buildings & Constructions Authority (KBCA) as most of the constructions have been illegally build around the area. Hence, the manipulation of the main site plan is seen making it hard for the other relevant departments to stick with the development plan.

The other problems may consists of Street lights, Parking Areas, Street roads carpeting, Play grounds and Parks etc.

Healthy environment creates healthy and peaceful minds which is necessary for up-brought of the next useful generation, thus it is one of the responsibility of the state that to provide with the basic needs to its citizens, the people of each and any locality, neighbourhood etc., the residents of Akhtar Colony, would immensely believe in the foundation of a 'Society' rather than remaining in the 'Colonial' set-up for attaining the best possible ways for upbringing of its people in each sphere of living.
