Ajit Sarkar (Bengali: অজিত সরকার) (1947 – 14 June 1998) was a member of Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was the member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly for Purnia constituency four times from 1980 till his murder in 1998. He entered politics through the Students' Federation of India, the CPM’s youth wing, and is still remembered in these parts as a firebrand leader who took up the cause of the landless and the poor. He represented Purnia four times in the Assembly between 1980 and 1998 for 18 years until 14 June 1998 when he was gunned down with his driver Harendra Sharma and party worker Ashfaqur Rehman in broad daylight at Subhash Nagar in Purnea.

Ajit Sarkar of CPI(M) defeated Sharda Prasad Singh of Congress in 1980, Kamaldeo Narayan Sinha of Congress in 1985, Ravindra Narayan Singh of JD in 1990 and Rajesh Ranjan of SP in 1995.

Ajit Sarkar murder case

Ajit Sarkar was a firebrand CPI-M member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Purnia, and active in farmer politics. On 1998-06-14, he was gunned down in broad daylight at Subhash Nagar in Purnia, along with his driver and a party worker. At that time. Govt. was transferred from the Bihar Police to the CBI, who can investigate Ajit Sarkar murder case.

Now Indian Jusiciary Court has been given judgement about Ajit Sarkar case.

Rise of junior Ajit Sarkar

Amit Sarkar the son of the slain CPM leader Ajit Sarkar is now the party’s candidate from his father’s constituency for the Bihar polls. Amit left for Melbourne in 2000 leaving behind his mother Madhvi and two sisters. He completed a bachelor’s degree in engineering with information technology and an MBA, now having quit his well-paid job with Aegis Australia to take to the heat and dust of the electoral battle in Purnia. Amit Sarkar appeared on the final episode of Satyamev Jayate Season 2 to narrate the story of his father's murder from his own constituency Purnia, Bihar.
