Ajax High School (AHS) is located in Ajax, Ontario, Canada within the Durham District School Board. It is the largest secondary school in southern Ajax and the fourth-largest in all of Ajax. The school teaches students in grades 9-12 and offers a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities. The school also offers a French Immersion program. Ajax High School was given a 5.5 rating in 2012/13 and ranked 478th out of 740 schools across Ontario.[1]
The school was opened in 1956 and has since undergone several large expansions. In the 1960s, a large section that today houses the main office, cafetorium, front entrance, courtyard, as well as several classrooms, was added. Later, in the early 2000s, an entire wing was added to the east side of the building. Many of these classrooms are now devoted to mathematics and science courses.
The school also organizes multiple events that work to make a difference in the surrounding community and worldwide. Each year a school wide "Terry Fox Run" is held in order to raise funds for cancer research. Students are all encouraged to participate and donate. The school also holds a Christmas drive where students and teachers donate perishable items for the homeless or underprivileged to have over the holidays. Another event held by the school is its multicultural show. In this show, talents from students are displayed and the money made from the show is donated to create workshops to help new immigrants to settle into Canada.
In recent years many students have petitioned to change the team mascot from "The Rams" to "The Battleships", in honour of the WWII vessel that the town was named after. For the most part these petitions have gone unanswered. The most likely cause for the lack of change is the cost involved in changing a school mascot.
In 2014, the school's entire senior Reach for the Top team, who had made the regional finals earlier that year, and was also known as the "Nerd Team", graduated. This has led to a large hole in the school team that is believed to take up to 4 years to recover. Other accomplishments of this team included winning "Top Distance Traveled" in the Inside Ride [2] and the school's famed "Fly on the Wall" competition (the last year in which these two events were held, due to administration changes), and placing well in the school's "March Madness" event, all in their graduating year.
