Ailean mac Ruaidhri

Ailean mac Ruaidhri, also known as Alan, was the son of Ruaidhri mac Raghnaill and brother of Dubhghall mac Ruaidhri. He fought on the side of Haakon IV of Norway for control of the Hebrides against other Scottish claimants.[1][2] He possessed the "North Isles" of the Uists, and Benbecula. He is known to have attended Parliament in 1285 when the succession of Margaret, Maid of Norway was debated and to have added Barra to his lands in 1309.[3][4] His illegitimate son Ruaidhri mac Ailein was Amie of the Isles's father.[5][Note 1]

Notes

  1. According to one source Amie was the daughter of Ailean mac Ruaidhri[4] and to another, Ailean was the son, not brother of Dubhghall mac Ruaidhri and thus Ruaidhri mac Raghnaill's grandson.[6]
