Aidan Guerra (born 25 February 1988) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who currently plays for the Sydney Roosters of the National Rugby League. Guerra primarily plays at second-row, lock and centre. A State of Origin, Australian and Italian representative player, Guerra has played his entire career to date at the Roosters, with whom he won the 2013 NRL Premiership.

Early years

Born in Cairns, Queensland, Guerra is of Italian descent. He attended Ignatius Park College in Townsville and played his junior rugby league with Townsville Brothers. Guerra was then signed with National Rugby League club, the Melbourne Storm before being banned after joining the Sydney Roosters when the June 30 transfer deadline expired.[2] Guerra never featured in the first grade squad, mostly being sidelined through injuries.[3] Guerra was named in the Italy national rugby league team for the 2009 European Cup but did not play.[4]

Playing career

2010

In Round 1 of the 2010 NRL season, Guerra made his NRL debut for the Sydney Roosters, against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, at ANZ Stadium scoring a try off the interchange bench in the Roosters 36-10 win.[5] Guerra played for New South Wales residents against the Queensland residents team scoring a try in the 28-20 win.[6] Guerra finished his debut year with him playing in 9 matches and scoring 3 tries for the Roosters in the 2010 NRL season.

2011

Guerra played in 14 matches and scored 6 tries for the Roosters in the 2011 NRL season. In 2011 Guerra was announced as a member of the Italian side that would compete in the 2013 World Cup qualifying, but again did not feature.[7]

2012

Guerra played in 19 matches and scored 5 tries for the Roosters in the 2012 NRL season.

2013

In the 2013 NRL Grand Final, Guerra played at second-row and scored a try in the Roosters 26-18 Grand Final victory over the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.[8][9] Guerra played in 22 matches and scored 6 tries in the Roosters successful 2013 NRL season. In the post season Guerra was named in the 24-man Italy squad for the 2013 World Cup.[10] Guerra played in all 3 matches at centre and scored 2 tries against Wales in Italy’s 32-16 win at Millennium Stadium.[11]

2014

In May 2014, Guerra was named as the only change to the Queensland State of Origin team for Game 1 of the 2014 State of Origin series in place of the injured Sam Thaiday.[12] Guerra made his State of Origin debut in the Maroons 12-8 loss at Suncorp Stadium.[13] Guerra started at second-row in Game 2 in the Maroons 6-4 loss at ANZ Stadium in resulting of the NSW Blues winning their first State of Origin series since 2005.[14] In Game 3 at Suncorp Stadium, Guerra scored his first origin try in the Maroons 32-8 win.[15] Guerra finished off the Roosters 2014 NRL season with him playing in 23 matches and scoring 6 tries. On 14 October 2014, Guerra was selected in the Australia Kangaroos 24-man squad for the 2014 Four Nations.[16][17] Guerra made his international debut and played his only match for Australia in the tournament in the Kangaroos 30-12 loss against New Zealand off the interchange bench at Suncorp Stadium.[18] On 23 December 2014, Guerra extended his contract with the Roosters to the end of the 2017 season.[19]
