Agshin Shafaat oglu Mehdiyev (Azerbaijani: Aqşin Şəfaət oğlu Mehdiyev; born 28 April 1949) is the Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the United Nations in New York. On 27 January 2009 Mehdiyev was appointed the non-resident Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Jamaica and on 2 April of the same year he started to hold the office of non-resident Azerbaijani Ambassador to Venezuela.[1]
Previously, from February 2001 to October 2006, Mehdiyev served as the Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe.[2]
Mehdiyev is the current President of the United Nations Security Council for the month of October 2013. He was also the President of the United Nations Security Council during May 2012.
Career
Having graduated from the Azerbaijan State University, Mehdiyev attended the Diplomatic Academy of the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he obtained his PhD. Fluent in English, Arabic, Russian and Turkish, he worked as a translator in the Soviet embassy in Egypt in 1971—1975.[2] From 1987 to 1991, he held a number of diplomatic positions in the Soviet embassy in former South Yemen.[2]
In April 2007 Mehdiyev has been concurrently accredited as ambassador of Azerbaijan to Cuba.[3]
