The okrug was completely surrounded by Chita Oblast.

On March 1, 2008, the oblast and the okrug merged to form Zabaykalsky Krai.

The territory of the former autonomous okrug is now administrated as Agin-Buryat Okrug of Zabaykalsky Krai.
