Agency for Natural Resources and Energy

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (資源エネルギー庁 Shigen-enerugī-chō) or ANRE, is an agency of Japan' Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and is responsible for Japan's policies in regard to energy and natural resources. Established in 1973, its first challenge was the 1973 oil crisis. Rising prices of fuel oil, and a lack of indigenous supplies lead the agency to promote independent energy development and diversification of supply sources, in addition to the increased stockpiling of supplies of oil. As well as calling for increased independence of energy production, the agency leads Asian countries in energy-saving efforts.
