"Afterworld" is a song by American alternative metal band CKY, featured on the soundtrack album to the 2010 comedy film Jackass 3D.[1][2] The song is the first by the band to feature Chad I Ginsburg on lead vocals, replacing regular lead vocalist Deron Miller.[1] It is also the first track to be released since bassist Matt Deis left the band in 2010 and was replaced by Matt "Matty J" Janaitis.[1] "Afterworld" was released as a digital download-only single on iTunes and Amazon.com on September 29, 2010, backed with an acoustic version of "The Era of an End" from Carver City.[2]

Style and reception

Writing for music website Artistdirect, critic Rick Florino suggests that the song "elevates [CKY's] patented progressively pummeling hard rock into new sonic territory [...,] teeter[ing] between deadly and dreamy with a combination of polyrhythmic riffing, searing lead lines and impassioned, infectious vocal delivery".[3] The website interviewed frontman Deron Miller, who had the following to say about the composition and direction of the track:

Well, after we were done cramming to finish Carver City—especially the version with 15 tracks on it—I said, "I've got this really cool idea." Chad [Ginsburg, guitar] pressed "record" on the computer and started playing these riffs that stood out. They were just coming to me one after the other, and they actually worked together. After I heard it and recorded it, I was able to write more. In about 20 minutes, I had all of these riffs we recorded simply so we could remember them. It was too late to do anything with it for Carver City, so we hung onto it. Then Jackass 3D came about, and there was an opportunity to have a song on there so we grabbed that song we were working on. I went out to get some pizza. When I came back, Chad had vocals on it already [Laughs]. I was like, "Run with it, man! I could use a break." He really liked it so he came up with all of these vocals for it.[3]

In response to a question about the lyrics of the song, Miller responded that "We wanted to write a song that fit into the mood of the movie. After we started seeing clips of Jackass 3D, we started to figure out what the song should be about and Chad just ran with it. He tried to make it about just going for it—in stunts and stuff like that. That's pretty much what it turned out to be. It's a song about stunts."[3]
