African Rural University (ARU), is a university in Uganda, the third-largest economy in the East African Community.
Location
The main campus of ARU is located in the town of Kagadi, Kibaale District, Bunyoro sub-region, Western Uganda. This location lies approximately 265 kilometres (165 mi), by road, west of Kampala, the capital and largest city in Uganda.[2] The coordinates of African Rural University are:0°56'32.0"N, 30°49'10.0"E (Latitude:0.942222; Longitude:30.819444).[3]
History
African Rural University was established in 2009.[4] It is the only university in East Africa, that focuses on teaching the principles of sustainable development exclusively to women. The course work is 60% theoretical teaching and 40% practical implementation. The university was accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE), in 2011.[5][6]
Academics
As of July 2014, the university offers one degree course, the Bachelor of Science in Technologies for Rural Transformation (BSc.TRT). It is a four year course, consisting of three years of academic study and one year of practical field activity. Each year of classroom study is divided into two semesters lasting seventeen weeks each. For now each admission class is limited to thirty female students only. There are plans to introduce degrees in Agribusiness and Rural Finance.[7]
