The seventh season of American animated television series Adventure Time, created by Pendleton Ward, is slated to air on Cartoon Network in the United States, following the series' sixth season. The series is based on a short produced for Frederator's Nicktoons Network animation incubator series Random! Cartoons. The season will follow the adventures of Finn, a human boy, and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape and grow and shrink at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. Along the way, they interact with the other main characters of the show: Princess Bubblegum, The Ice King, and Marceline the Vampire Queen.

Production

On July 25, 2014, the series was renewed for a seventh season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.[2] According to co-executive producer Adam Muto, storyboarding for the series began in August 2014.[3] Tom Herpich later revealed that he and Steve Wolfhard pitched the season premiere episode to the Adventure Time crew in late September 2014.[4] Muto later revealed on Spring.me that the season will contain around the same number of episodes as the sixth season, although he was not specific.[1]

According to Jesse Moynihan, the main storyboarding staff will be composed of himself, Herpich, Wolfhard, Seo Kim, and Somvilay Xayaphone, with Adam Muto pitching in to help.[5] Various other artists will join them. On September 29, 2014, Kent Osborne posted an image on Instagram, confirming that Ako Castuera and Moynihan would be temporary partners for the season; Castuera had left the series after storyboarding the fifth season finale "Billy's Bucket List".[6][7] According to Moynihan, Castuera helped him board only three episodes.[8] Sam Alden, who co-storyboarded the sixth season episode "The Mountain" was later hired as Moynihan's permanent partner.[9]

Luke Pearson—a British cartoonist who storyboarded several episodes during the fifth season with Somvilay Xayaphone—returned to storyboard several episodes with Emily Partridge.[10][11][12] Kirsten Lepore, a film-maker known for her stop-motion animations, revealed on her Twitter account that she would be helming an episode entirely by herself for the season.[13] Lepore had previously animated the short stop-motion tag for Frederator, the production company that produces many shows, including Adventure Time.[14] Hanna K. later revealed on her Tumblr that she will be boarding an episode about Marceline with Adam Muto.[15]

Miniseries

On February 18, 2015, during Cartoon Network's upfront announcing shows for their 2015–16 season, the network announced a special miniseries, which—according to Muto—would air as part of season seven.[16][17] The miniseries will follow Finn and Jake as they face a new threat brought about when one of Princess Bubblegum's science projects unleashes the ghosts of Marceline's past.[16] On February 22, 2015, Muto revealed that, while most of the regular story-boarding crew members developed the series, several guest artists helped out as well.[18] The miniseries' number of episodes, additional returning cast, and air dates have not been announced.

Cast

Returning voice actors may include voice acting veterans John DiMaggio (who portrays Jake the Dog), Tom Kenny (who plays The Ice King), and Hynden Walch (who voices Princess Bubblegum). In addition, Jeremy Shada portrays the voice of Finn the Human, and Olivia Olson portrays Marceline the Vampire Queen. Ward himself provides the voice for several minor characters, including Lumpy Space Princess. Former storyboard artist Niki Yang voices the sentient video game console BMO in English, as well as Jake's girlfriend, Lady Rainicorn, in Korean. Polly Lou Livingston, a friend of Pendleton Ward's mother, Bettie Ward, plays the voice of the small elephant Tree Trunks.[19][20] Jessica DiCicco voices Flame Princess, Finn's ex-girlfriend.[21][22] The Adventure Time cast records their lines together in group recordings as opposed to different recording sessions with each voice actor. This is to record more natural sounding dialogue among the characters. Hynden Walch described these group recordings as like "doing a play reading—a really, really out there play."[23] Various other characters are voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, Maria Bamford, and Steve Little.[24]
