Acanthospermum australe (Paraguayan starburr,[2][3] Ihi kukae hipa, Paraguay bur, Paraquay starbur, Pipili, Sheepbur, Spiny-bur) is an herbaceous plant first described as a species in 1758.[4][5][6][7]
The species is native to South America and introduced in China and in parts of the United States, Canada, South Africa and currently a cosmopolitan pioneer in the tropics and sub-tropics. [8][9][10]
Extracts of Acanthospermum australe have in vitro antiviral activity against herpesvirus and poliovirus,[11] but clinical effects have not been studied.
